Who was Dr B C Roy?

The doctor in whose honour India celebrates National Doctors' Day

 

National Doctors’ Day is observed on July 1 every year. It is observed to honour medical doctors in India. July 1 is the birth anniversary of Dr B C Roy – a renowned physician who also served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.







Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1, 1882. Dr B C Roy’s death anniversary also falls July 1. He was the personal physician to M K Gandhi and actively took part in India’s struggle for independence.











Dr B C Roy was instrumental in the setting up of several medical colleges and hospitals in Uttar Pradesh and Bengal. Jadavpur TB Hospital, Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan and Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital are some of the institutions he helped set up.

Dr B C Roy was awarded the Bharat Ratna in February 1961. After his death in 1962, his house was turned into a nursing home named after his mother Aghorkamini Devi.
